Lesson Topic
dependent and independent events
Lesson Outline
review compound events by solving a few problems given in the text book. Define independent events as the outcome of one event not affecting the outcome of the second event. Given a bag containing 3 white marbles, 2 yellow, 3 green and 4 red. Remove one marble, note its color, replace it in the bag and then remove a second marble. What is the probability of #1 being red and #2 being white?. Explain that to find the probability of both events occurring the probability of each event is found individually, and then you multiply the probabilities to find the answer.
P(red) is 4/12 or 1/3 and p(white) is 3/12 or 1/4. P(red then white) is 1/3 x 1/4 = 1/12
