Graphing Populations -
Continuing with the activity from our last class, Rory was challenged to graph his data; ultimately showing that the population of bubbles with care (k population) lived longer than bubbles that were not given assistance (r population). Rory then completed an activity, plotting the gray bat population from a single colony in southern Indiana, between 1982 and 2000. After he had completed the graph, we discussed the data and examined his graph. Using the graph, Rory conducted his own analysis to determine the percent increase in population over the study. I challenged Rory to estimate the number of bats in the colony from a year where data was not collected, based on his graph. I asked several additional questions about the data including: how often the population was faced with a decline, and when the colony was placed under federal protection.
