Lesson Topic
Word problems to 20
Lesson Outline
Jonathan began solving word problems to 20, using addition and subtraction strategies. I explained word problems as little stories that are missing a piece of information. Jonathan gained practice understanding the story in the word problems we tackled, and deciding whether to add or subtract, relating that to an equation, and then choosing a strategy to solve the equation. He finished the session making up a word problem using the number bond provided in an example. Jonathan did well on the exercises, requiring just one reminder to take good note of the language used in order to solve the probem correctly. We reviewed how the words "fewer than" indicate that subtraction is the operation that will be needed to solve the word problem. He worked on a homework page in class as Jonathan does not get homework over the weekend. He was told he will receive a math quiz on Monday to assess his recently acquired grasp of material.
