Lesson Outline
3-3 Estimating Products and Quotients
We learned that there is more than one way to estimate a product or a quotient. One way to estimate the products of whole numbers and decimals is to round each number to its greatest place. When you do this, each number has only one nonzero digit, and as a result the computation involves only basic facts and placement of the decimal point. For example, 3.28 × 7.93 is estimated as 3 × 8 which equals 24, and 3.28 × 0.79 is estimated as 3 × 0.8 which is equal to 2.4.
