Lesson Topic
Book 2, Lesson 3 Exceptions to welded sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by playing Quick Drill in Reverse. He reviewed all the vowels. Kellan reviewed: sh, ch, m, p, qu, r, and z. He reviewed welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: ang, olt, ing, ink, ost, and ild. Kellan practiced the sight words: wind, friend, front, and comb on the whiteboard with colorful markers. Kellan took his dictation for 2.3. He got all of the sounds, real words, and nonsense words correct. Kellan did an analysis on these words by underlining the closed vowel exception and marking it with a "c" with an "x" through it and putting the long sign (macron) over the long vowel. Kellan underlined the digraphs and the blends properly. He drew an asterisk over the bonus letters and marked up the closed vowel sounds. Kellan needed review and rewriting of the sight words: want, comb, front, and friend. Kellan will still need more practice to commit these sight words to memory. Kellan took dictation by writing three sentences. He remembered to capitalize the first word of a sentence. Kellan put proper punctuation after each sentence. He marked up the vowels and the syllable types. Kellan had a problem misspelling shop as "shope." He made the correction on this word. Kellan read the story on p. 53 The Best Host. Kellan discussed the jobs that a host has in order to be a good host. Kellan was able to retell the story in his own words. He helped to define the word "host" by telling me things that a host does to make a guest feel welcomed.
