Lesson Topic
Book 2, Lesson 3 Exceptions to welded sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reviewing the vowel sounds with keywords. He reviewed the consonants and digraphs: sh, v, g,j, and b. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and exceptions: ong, all, ink, ost, ild, and olt. Next Kellan read the words: sing, slots, and frogs from the magnetic tiles. Kellan needed a review on reading slots. By showing him the baseword first, then adding the suffix "s" he was able to read the word correctly. Kellan read the words: scold, mind, molt, volt, and bind. We did dictionary pages for the words: scold, molt, volt, and bind. Kellan needed a context and discussion to begin to accommodate these words into his vocabulary. Kellan continued his word study by playing "Chutes and Ladders" where Kellan rolls the die, then he reads that number of word cards in order to move ahead. Kellan loves this game. He is getting good practice with the new closed vowel exception words. Kellan was charted on 2.3 words. He had difficulty with the word "wild" but after some stopping and reviewing the magnetic tiles and the sounds of the closed vowel exceptions, he got the word right. Kellan has passed 2.3 with 15/15. Kellan read ten sentences and I coached him to learn where to phrase when reading. This is working on prosody. He still has dictation to finish and then we can move to the next lesson next week.
