Lesson Topic
Book 2 Review and Testing
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by sorting a word stack into eight categories. Many of the words overlapped into different categories and Kellan had to tell me all three. The categories were: words with two-letter blends, words with three-letter blends, words with digraph blends, words with welded sounds, words with closed vowel sound exceptions, words with baseword and suffix, words with bonus letters, and nonsense words. Kellan worked with the word cards and reviewed all the concepts learned in Book 2. This activity gave Kellan a high challenge, but with assistance, he was able to complete the task. Next, Kellan took his test on reading real words. He scored 15/15. Kellan took his test on Nonsense words. He scored 15/15. These tests include all of the skills taught in Book 2. Next, Kellan took a word analysis test. He had to find all the basewords and suffixes and underline the baseword and circle the suffix. Next, Kellan boxed all the welded sounds and the closed vowel exceptions. Kellan underlined all the digraphs and all the blends. He was able to find the two-letter blends at the beginning and ends of words. Kellan underlined the three-letter blends. Next, Kellan had to mark up all the vowels and star the bonus letters. Kellan did well on this part of the test. The final part of the test for Book 2 is a spelling test. Kellan spelled 15 real words from Book 2 and 15 Nonsense words from Book 2. Kellan got 13/15 on his real word test. He got 14/15 on his Nonsense word test. Both of these grades are passing grades. Kellan made small errors on naming a "p" as a "q." Another error was writing "skr" instead of "scr" on the word "scrub." Kellan is to be congratulated for completing Book 2 successfully. Next week we will begin Book 3.

Lesson Comments
Kellan worked hard at doing all the analysis activities I gave him. He did well on the spelling test. He gets confused when he has all the skill requirements in front of him, but with encouragement and a little support, he was able to complete all of the testing requirements.
