Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson today by reciting the vowel team. Little by little he will get familiar with these 24 vowel phonemes and be able to decode many more new words. Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse and reviewed the spelling and sounds of all the vowels including his new symbol for the "schwa" which sounds like /u/ for any vowel in the unaccented syllable at the end of a two-syllable word. Kellan practiced writing two new sight words on the whiteboard with colorful markers. He wrote: listen and often. Today was the second day of practicing these new words. Next, Kellan built the review words: stunts, spend, and blinks. He was able to tell me baseword-suffix, blends, and a digraph. Kellan was then taught how to practice spelling two-syllable words by tapping on two cards and spelling the word one syllable at a time. Kellan spelled admit, solid, suntan, tiptop, and puffball using this method. Next, Kellan worked on his dictation test. He did a perfect job on all his real words and nonsense words. During the dictation, Kellan misspelled both listen and often. Corrections were made during the analysis portion of the test. Kellan also marked up all ten words on his test by scooping the two suffixes, and marking up the vowels, digraphs, blends, and welded sounds. Kellan will work on sentences next week. He is doing well in Book 3.
