Book 3, Lesson 1 two-syllable words Nonsense Words
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reciting the sounds and letters from the Vowel Team. Next, he reviewed the sounds of the vowels plus the new schwa sound of /u./ Kellan reviewed the sounds and letters g, b, x, f, r, s, /z/, sh wh, th, and ch. He reviewed the sounds and keywords for the welded sounds: ong, olt, am, an, ing, ost, and ind. Kellan marked up the review words: jackets, channels, and kennels on the whiteboard using colorful markers. He was required to underline the baseword and circle the suffix, scoop the syllables, and mark up the vowels and digraphs. Next, Kellan applied these skills to the nonsense words: kelmins, poplangs, tipdex, undopsl, azbim. I showed Kellan how to mark up a word that has only one consonant. He learned to scoop after the consonant. Kellan also learned to make the schwa symbol and apply it above the vowel of a two-syllable word ending in an unaccented syllable like the word: comet. Kellan played Chutes and Ladders with a stack of words from 3.1 including many nonsense words. Kellan took his test on p. 15 and got 15/15 Nonsense words to read. Kellan read ten sentences on p. 17. He had a little trouble with the word napkin. Once he divided the word into syllables, he was able to read the word.
