Book 3, Lesson 2 Two-syllable words with more than three sounds
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by doing the analysis of his Dictation on 3.1. Kellan scooped two-syllable words. He marked up the vowels, underlined digraphs and blends, and boxed welded sounds. Kellan got all of his sight words correct. Kellan analyzed three sentences and circled all sight words, scooped two-syllable words, marked punctuation, and marked up vowels. He read each sentence back to me and was able to spell words orally when asked. Next, Kellan read The Best Lunch. He did a great job reading the passage fluently. Kellan needed to stop to learn the meaning of the words: famish and beckon. For these words, we added a definition and sentence to Kellan's dictionary. Then, Kellan made a diagram to illustrate the meaning of the word. Kellan was able to retell the story about the husband who made a shrimp salad for everyone in the family. Kellan was curious about how to make a shrimp salad, so we looked up a few recipes online. Next, Kellan started the drills for lesson 3.2. He recited all the vowels and the new schwa sound of /u./ Kellan practiced the sounds and keywords for: sh, g, b, f, r, s, z, l, and wh. He practiced the sounds and letters with keywords to: ost, ind, ing, ild, ang, an, and am. Next, Kellan read three review words: seven, wagon, and punish. He practiced scooping the two-syllable words after the first consonant. Kellan practiced making the schwa symbol above an unaccented syllable as in the word: wagon. Kellan then practiced the new words: gumdrop, problem, children, pumpkin, and windmill. He read these words for syllable cards where Kellan could see how these words are divided into syllables. Kellan played Ladder to review a large stack of 3.2 words including some nonsense words. Kellan is making steady progress.
