Lesson Topic
Geography and Geology/Map terminology
Lesson Outline
We reviewed map terminology and defined geography as the study of places and the relationship between people and their environments. We learned that the father of geography was an ancient Greek scholar named Eratosthenes who calculated the circumference of the Earth, and in so doing, we learned a new vocabulary word and that 'circumference' means the distance around something. Next, we discussed the difference between geology and geography. We learned that learned that Geology is the primary Earth Science and means "study of the Earth," and that the main difference between geography and geology is that the former (Geography) mostly deals with the physical overall shapes of the land, whereas Geology is a science that is interested in how the land got the shape it did and is mostly about what the ground is made up, from a natural perspective. Additionally, we learned that a compass rose on a map is the part that tells direction, and that the imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres is called the Equator. Mercer and I looked on a map to point it out and we found it on the map hanging on the wall in his room. We ended our session with the newly acquired knowledge that another name for a mapmaker is 'cartographer,' or a person who studies and practices that art of making maps.

Lesson Comments
I was asked to sub for Mercer today, 3/31/21 from 1:30 - 2:30. There was no subject listed for him on the schedule, so I checked to see what a 5th grader should know on C-Palms to get an idea of relevant subject material for him,and he eliminated some subjects he did not want, and i took it from there.
