Book 3, Lesson 3 /kt/
Lesson Outline
Kellan started his lesson by reading a list of sight words used in the sentence readings on p. 57. Kellan read all ten sentences and read carefully on all the two-syllable words. Kellan is taking note of words that end with the blend /kt./ Next, Kellan played Quick Drill in Reverse. He reviewed the sounds and letters for all the vowels; consonants and digraphs: qu, s, g, b, g, z, y, and ch. Kellan had a miscue on the digraph ch. He spelled it sh and took time to circle back to the right letters. Kellan reviewed the welded sounds and closed vowel exceptions: olt, ind, ink, ang, unk, and ank. Next, Kellan scooped and marked up the review words: itself, extend, and lipstick. On "lipstick" we reviewed the rule where usually a two-syllable word with the /k/ sound at the end is spelled with a "c," but in this word, because it is a compound word, the /k/ sound is spelled "ck" as it is in a one-syllable word. Kellan scooped and marked up the words: object, contact, exact, contract, and conduct. We worked on the difference in accented syllables in the words: contract, conduct, and object to indicate if it is a noun or a verb. Kellan was introduced to the sight words: ballet and buffet. Kellan learned that both of these words are French and have a silent "t" at the end of the word. Kellan was curious to know more about ballet. We spent a few minutes watching part of The Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers on Youtube, and also some of the jumps by the famous ballet artist Baryshnikov. Kellan started his dictation. He completed the sounds, real words, and nonsense words with no errors. He is working on the sight words and sentences next time.

Lesson Comments
Kellan worked well today, but was a little rusty in one sound and took time to settle down after his big vacation.
