Unit 2: The Changing Earth Module: Natural Hazards
Lesson Outline
Lesson 1: Earthquake Risks – Dutch learned which areas are at high risk for earthquakes. The Western states in the United States are at highest risk. California has a transform plate boundary and there is a convergent plate boundary in Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Then he learned that some parts of central and eastern United States have a higher earthquake risk because they have had them before. Next he learned that scientists can tell you the likelihood of an area experiencing an earthquake but they can’t tell you exactly when it will happen. Next he learned that to reduce the impact of earthquakes, buildings can be designed to withstand the shaking that occurs.
