Lesson Topic
Geography - to understand physical and cultural characteristics of places.
Lesson Outline
The lesson today focused on understanding how human actions can impact the environment, which addressed Standard SS.8.G.5 of 8th grade Florida standards. To help better understand the physical and cultural characteristics of places, we explored examples of physical elements involving climate, terrain, and resources (Standard SS.8.G.2). I then had Ben watch a video about the Exxon Valdez oil spill which occurred 32 years ago when millions of gallons of oil ran aground in the waters of Alaska. Ben made appropriate comments about the devastating effect this oil spill caused to nature, damaging 1300 miles of shoreline and killing wildlife and fish. We discussed why prevention is now the focus, and how oil spills drills are held regularly as a result of this disaster. Ben commented how he is particularly affected by anything that damages nature.

Lesson Comments
I informed Ben that next week is standardized testing when he asked about the notice, and informed him that he would be taking an assessment in S.S. for @ 25 minutes. I showed Ben some of the C-Palm standards in Social Studies with which he should be familiar, and asked him if he wished to identify any areas he wishes to review - as I did not have him most of the year. He mentioned that he found it "overwhelming," and threw his pencil across the room. I therefore did not belabor the point and instead we reviewed a topic in geography, as noted above, which piqued his interest as well as covered Florida standards in an area which should have been covered in his earlier studies. Ben appeared to have been experiencing some stomach issues. He was very flatulent and passed gas audibly several times throughout our session. He apologized, but I opened the door and left the room when he did so and when he asked to use the rest room. I needed to (discreetly) leave the noxious fumes in the classroom at least twice during our time together. I am concerned with how Ben will tolerate the testing. I don't know how he's done in the past, but I am concerned that he will not make an effort to do his best in answering questions due to frustration. I will do my best to help him feel comfortable and unstressed, but I wanted to make my concern known.
