Lesson 4 Pure Substances and Mixtures: We learned to describe different ways in which particles that make up matter can combine to form various substances. Single particles of matter called atoms join to form elements, compounds, and mixtures. Then we learned how elements which are substances made up of a single kind of atom exist in nature. Next we learned that compounds are made up of more than one kind of atom. Then we learned that a mixture is a combination of substances that are combined physically but not chemically.
