Settling Oregon & the Oregon Trail: Connecting the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean
Lesson Outline
The Oregon country, between the Rocky Mountains & Pacific Ocean, containing what is now Oregon, Washington, Idaho & part of Wyoming and Montana. We discussed other nations that wanted this territory and how the U.S. jointly occupied this territory with another nation. Fur trappers were the first to come to this region. Americans began traveling to Oregon to settle in the 1830s. Skirmishes and tragedies between settlers and Native Americans often ensued. We discussed the Whitman Mission, the "great migration" along the Oregon Trail, and settlement in the Willamette Valley. We discussed the concept of "Manifest Destiny" analyzing the famous painting. In 1846, President Polk and Britain set the border between Oregon and British Canada at the 49th parallel.
