During our first period class, Vice President Kamala Harris became the first woman to assume presidential power! Why? Because President Biden underwent a routine colonoscopy at Walter Reed Medical Center early this morning. Because the procedure required anesthesia, there was a temporary transfer of power to the vice president. For 85 minutes, Kamala Harris became the first woman in American History to hold presidential power! The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution addresses presidential succession and disability. It clarifies that the vice president becomes president if the president dies, resigns, or is removed from office, and establishes how a vacancy in the office of the vice president can be filled. It describes the temporary transfer of the president's powers and duties to the vice president. The vice president becomes acting president until the presidential powers and duties are returned to the president. The 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1967. This was due to the tragic assassination of JFK in 1963. We discussed the events and circumstances that took place on Nov. 22, 1963.
