Today we discussed significant events in three western states as the concept of "Manifest Destiny" swept through the U.S. in the 1820s - 1850s. We began with TEXAS - the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. We discussed what happened & why is it significant in US History. That same year, the Battle of San Jacinto saw Texas separate from Mexico and become its own republic until it became a state in 1845 - entering the Union as slave state. CALIFORNIA
won independence from Mexico during the Bear Flag Revolt in 1846. This was followed by the 1849 CA gold rush with CA becoming a state in 1859. CA entered the Union as a free state. We began to discuss the history and settlement of UTAH and we will continue to discuss UT on Monday.
