Session Date
Lesson Topic
Kingdom of Benin
Lesson Outline
Today's session focused on the Kingdom of Benin. Mercer reviewed material that detailed how the first king of Benin came to power and the many years he ruled this kingdom. Mercer learned that the kingdom invited prince Oranmiyn of Ife to rule them as they were dissatisfied with the rule of a dynasty of semimythical kings at the time. The son of prince Oranmiyn, Eweka was regarded as the first king (oba-ruler) and reigned for many years. He rebuilt the capital (present-day Benin City), endowing it with great walls and moats and becoming his people's supreme political, judicial, economic, and spiritual leader.
