Lesson Topic
Life for late 18th Cent, New Immigrants/Presentation Review for Tomorrow
Lesson Outline
Work was hard to find and new immigrants worked in dangerous industries such as steel mines in PA or sweatshops in NYC. While immigrants tried to preserve some parts of their own cultures, most wanted to assimilate. Large immigrant neighborhoods quickly developed in NY, Chicago, San Francisco & other large cities. These groups faced discrimination in the U.S. - especially from the nativist movement that had opposed immigration since the 1830s. New laws to slow immigration were passed such as Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 & the Immigration Act of 1917. American cities grew rapidly after the Civil War. By 1910, nearly half of the population lived in cities. After 1914, a large number of African Americans began to move to Northern cities. We discussed life in tenements and slums in the cities, how people began to escape to city suburbs. We concluded with a look at the new architecture, infrastructure and transportation systems in cities. Time was also spent on helping Bella with her profile on Rosa Parks which is due tomorrow. Bella also wanted to discuss Putin's attack on Ukraine. She is understandably concerned and had a lot of questions about it.
