Progressive Presidents
Lesson Outline
At the age of 42, V.P. Theodore Roosevelt becomes President when President McKinley becomes the 2nd president assassinated in U.S. history. As president. Roosevelt was known to support business regulation and other progressive reforms. He became known as the "trustbuster." Roosevelt wins the election of 1904 promising a "Square deal," fair & equal treatment for all people. He was also a conservationist and has been called America's first environmental president. Roosevelt loved the outdoors. He formed the U.S. Forest Service, created the nation's first national forests & wildlife sanctuaries and formed the National Conservation Commision. William Howard Taft succeeds Roosevelt as the next Republican president in 1908. By 1912, Roosevelt decides to run for president again, but Taft also runs for re-election on the republican ticket. So Roosevelt forms his own party, the Bull-Moose Party. This split the republican party and democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson wins the presidential election of 1912. President Wilson lowered tariffs on imported goods, passed the Federal Reserve Act to regulate banking and passed laws creating a new income tax. As the 20th century dawned, prejudice and discrimination excluded many groups. Nativism & discrimination impacted African Americans, Catholics, Mexican, Asian and Jewish Americans. We discussed important leaders such as W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, Dr. Carlos Montezuma.

Lesson Comments
We were initially informed Bella wouldn't be online until 11:00am. But just after 9:30am, Elise told me Bella was available for our remote first period class! Bella and her Dad told me they were all going to see the Beatles' Rain at the Kravits Ctr. tonight. I asked Bella if this would interfere with her test prep for tomorrow as she has a history test. She said, "Well...I have three other tests tomorrow, too." So I am going to move Bella's history test to Mon., 3/7 as of course, her success is paramount.
