Who Were the Progressives?
Lesson Outline
During the Progressive Era began from 1900 - 1917, progressive reformers worked at both local and national levels to address a wide range of reform issues. After the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became President and was a progressive reformer. Roosevelt worked to expand the power of the federal government with many Progressive reforms. Some of these reforms were aimed at big business, monopolies, trusts (such as the railroad) and he became known as a "trust buster". Roosevelt wanted the federal government to regulate businesses. He was also interested in social reforms. He advocated for health and labor laws, fair trade, workplace safety, conservation of land under federal protection. Roosevelt's role as President strengthened the Progressive movement and it did improve the lives of everyday citizens. Progressive activists came from a variety of backgrounds. President Woodrow Wilson was another notable progressive reformer. Social reforms such as prohibition and suffrage were successful during Wilson's presidency with the passage of two constitutional amendments. There were a handful of important progressive-era economic reforms under Wilson, as well, including the establishment of the IRS and the introduction of the income tax.

Lesson Comments
I had early morning labs taken on the way to school so I signed in 19 min. past the hour. Judie was aware of this and fortunately, no substitute was needed during these 19 minutes as I made it to school before my first period student.
