Unit 6: Minerals and Rocks
Lesson Outline
Lesson 1 Minerals: We learned that extreme temperature and pressure can break the bonds between atoms and allow them to rejoin to form new crystalline solids. Minerals can grow and replace other minerals during metamorphism. Graphite which is mostly composed of carbon transforms at high pressure into diamond a different mineral composed of carbon. Minerals are classified into two large groups called silicates and non-silicates. Next we learned that minerals are absolutely identified by x-ray and chemical analysis but there are methods that scientists and collectors can use in the field without specialized equipment.
Assignment: Complete active reading prompts in science workbook and add the properties of minerals to your science workbook.
