Lesson Topic
Greek Society and Government
Lesson Outline
Mercer learned about the four most common systems of Ancient Greek government. He reviewed and defined democracy, monarchy, oligarchy, and tyranny. Mercer was interested to learn that the word ‘democracy’ is taken from the Greek language and means 'demos,' which refers to the entire citizen population. We also reviewed facts about each of these systems of government. Mercer has a great wealth of general information about geography, and he demonstrates excellent recall skills. He was interested in a map of Ancient Greece, noting the seas that border it and he correctly identified the Mediterranean as the one to the South. We also discussed the topography of Greece and learned that about four-fifths of the country is mountainous, and that the 3 geographical features are the mountains, the seas, and the islands. Mercer responded correctly when queried about the information. We discussed the significance of the geography and topography, as it contributed to shaping its government and culture.

Lesson Comments
I was asked to sub for Daniela today, Friday 4-8-22, from 11 - 12. (Social Studies). I was originally scheduled to have Chris Tisi for Writing Enrichment but was switched to Mercer. Also, I spoke to Mercer about his unkind and insensitive mimicking of Santino's verbalizations the other day. His response; "So, he didn't hear me." I explained why that was unacceptable and that he will not win any friends that way - at least not good, reputable ones!
