Lesson Outline
This afternoon, Mercer read an article about the Brown Basilisk lizard. He learned that while they are not native to Florida, one was just spotted last week right here in the Batt playground area. I noted that it scurried away in a most unusual fashion, almost as if it were running on legs. When Mercer read the article, he learned that the lizard is also known as the Jesus Christ lizard, so called because of its ability to walk - and even run - on water. Mercer learned facts about it this afternoon. Mercer learned that these lizards hail from Mexico, Central America and parts of Columbia. We discussed the word "hail" and how we could determine its meaning from contextual clues. Next time Mercer is out for recess, he will keep his eyes peeled for the Brown Basilisk lizard. We also discussed what is meant when someone is a 'champion for the underdog,' as it arose naturally in our conversation at some point. Mercer listened as I offered an example from which he deduced that it refers to a person (team, country, etc.) that is thought to be in a weaker position than others and therefore not likely to be successful, win a competition, etc. It provided for an interesting discussion and food for thought.

Lesson Comments
You came in to talk to Mercer about his behavior during the session after he was done reading the article - but I did not note this in the summary. Please free free to add it - or let me know if you wish me to add it - if you feel it should be included.
