I had taken a book out of the library entitled, "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom," by Louis Sachar. I thought Mercer might identify with some aspects of the protagonist's character. Mercer was more interested in researching a building about which we had discussed at the very onset of our session, the Flatiron building in NYC, as he was interested in its architecture. Therefore, we looked up images of the building and I had Mercer research its history. He found it interesting to note that when it first opened, the Flatiron building’s female tenants were at a disadvantage since the building's designers had failed to include any ladies' restrooms. Management had to designate bathrooms for men and women on alternating floors. This fact provided a diversion and a fortuitous way to reconnect to the book I had taken out for Mercer, (“There’s a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom”). I finished the session by resuming reading the 2nd chapter in the book in the hopes of whetting Mercer's appetite, but for the last part of the session, Mercer joined another student in a game of chess against a teacher during which he demonstrated excellent focus and strategy.
