Lesson Topic
Should FL Reclaim the Reedy Creek/Lake Buena Vista District from Disney World?
Lesson Outline
In central FL, Reedy Creek is a special purpose district that was created by FL state law in May 1967. It gives The Walt Disney Company extensive governmental control over the land in and around its central Florida theme parks. As a special purpose district, Reedy Creek gives The Walt Disney Company extensive governmental control over the land in and around its central Florida theme parks. In April Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill into law that eliminated the unique legal setup that allows Disney to operate as an independent government around its Orlando-area theme parks. Yesterday, Florida Gov. DeSantis suggested that the state would take over Disney World's self-governing Reedy Creek district rather than handing control over to local governments. Joshua is very much in agreement with how Governor DeSantis is handling this issue. He believes the Reedy Creek/Lake Buena Vista district should not be its own entity and that it should be governed by the State of Florida. Great questions and discussions in class today, Joshua!
