Lesson Topic
Intro to organic chemistry
Lesson Outline
Question to determine the "everyday" meaning of organic.
Define organic chemistry as the chemistry of carbon containing g compounds.
Briefly examine the history regarding the first organic compound synthesized in the lab, which was the compound urea.
Elicit the definition of a hydrocarbon from the name hydrocarbon.
Sketch the hybridization of a carbon atom to form orbitals allowing and requiring 4 covalent bonds.
Using molecular models, have the student construct the simplest hydrocarbon containing one carbon and 4 hydrogen atoms. Name the molecule and discuss some of its physical properties.
Expand on the single carbon molecule to 2 carbons, then 3, then 4. For each one have the student write the molecule formula and draw the structural formula based on the molecular model constructed.
