Session Date
Lesson Topic
Alkyl groups and alcohols
Lesson Outline
Outline and discuss the chemistry of the alkyl groups; alkanes minus a hydrogen. Discuss the method of naming alkyl groups, and use examples of the first 3 in the series. Discuss nomenclature using the alkyl groups, and where they are located. Use 3 examples of adding methyl, ethyl, and propyl groups to a alkane.
Discuss organic functional groups, specifically alcohols, acids, and ketones. Concentrate on the alcohol group, OH, and that in organic compounds it is called a hydroxyl group. Contrast it to what it creates in an inorganic compound, a base. Discuss the formation of alcohols by fermentation of carbohydrates. Discuss wood alcohol, grain alcohol, and rubbing alcohol. Use examples to show how the nomenclature is used to indicate the specific location of the OH group.
