Today, Bella and I discussed and researched the medieval social concept of "chain of being." We discussed how medieval people believed that God assigned all humans a specific place in society, but this concept was being challenged by Shakespeare's time. We discussed and took notes on ways in which an Elizabethan audience might view Desdemona's decision to run away and marry without her father's knowledge, and how those views might differ from those of a modern audience.
