More About the Monroe Doctrine
Lesson Outline
President Monroe will probably be best remembered for the Monroe Doctrine, which became the cornerstone of American foreign policy well into the 20th century. In his seventh State of the Union address, the President spoke up about events that were happening throughout the Western Hemisphere. In December, 1823, Monroe declared, 'the American continents and W. hemisphere were officially closed to any colonization. "Any attempt for a country to impose their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety." The Monroe Doctrine was an attempt to keep other nations away from the American continent.
Monroe told the strong and established nations of the world to stay out of America's backyard. The War of 1812 proved that America wouldn't back down from a fight.
