Why Do We Change the Clocks?
Lesson Outline
This weekend, we will set our clocks back one hour and gain and extra hour on Sunday. Could 2022 be the last year for the "fall back" time change? While first implemented in the U.S by the Standard Time Act of 1918, a bill passed by the U.S. Senate earlier this year could spell the end of the practice. Moving from Standard Time to Daylight Savings time in the U.S. is an old practice, steeped in history. Ben Franklin was a proponent of it as long ago as 1784. Over the centuries, changing the clocks has been considered as something that could help farmers, help the U.S. in war time, as demonstrated in the Standard Time Act of 1918. The only two states that don't change their clocks are AZ & HI. If the "Sunshine Protection Act" (already approved by Senate) becomes law, 2023 may be the first year where all 50 states will experience continuous Daylight Savings Time.
