Lesson Comments
Today Jaydn and I reviewed punctuation and when to use a period, comma, and semi-colon. We defined sentences as complete thoughts with both a subject and a verb and classified them as declarative, interrogative, and exclamatory. We reviewed the coordinating conjunctions and utilized the FANBOYS acronym to remember for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so. Jayden did not do the homework that she was supposed to do for class, so it became guided practice. She and I interactively created sentences using each of the coordinating conjunctions. She learned that a comma usually precedes a coordinating conjunction. We reviewed that semi-colons only go between sentences that are closely related. We moved forward reviewing fiction and non-fiction and informational text. Jaydn shared with me that she has written one piece on informational text regarding the environment. That is excellent because we are going to move forward with a 5-paragraph essay on plastic and I will supply the reading excerpts so she won't have to do the research. She is to read "Faster Than We Can Understand" for our next meeting and outline it. Jaydn did not turn on her camera and she does not check her email. I encouraged her to begin to check her email. I explained to her the many facets of English classes and the structure of the class. Tuesdays will focus on reading. Wednesdays will focus on grammar and tomorrow she will take the IXL diagnostic. Thursdays will focus on writing, but of course everyday will encompass all including speaking skills.
