President Lincoln's Legacy: Plans for a Reconstructed Union
Lesson Outline
President Abraham Lincoln envisioned a period of Reconstruction in the South following Civil War. Unfortunately, Lincoln's leadership was gone and the new president, Andrew Johnson was now in office. The period from 1865-1877 is known as Reconstruction in US History. The Freedmen's Bureau was established to help former slaves find work, housing, food, and to provide access to medical services. Lincoln did not, however, redistribute farmland to former slaves under his proposals, and he left much of the implementation process up to the states and new state governments. Radical Republicans went on to win sweeping victories in an upcoming election leading to the period of Radical Reconstruction that would dominate the period.
