Empires in Collision
Lesson Outline
Today we talked about changes in China, the Ottoman Empire and Japan during the 19th and early 20th centuries. We reviewed the Taiping Uprising and Boxer Rebellion in China and some of the weakening of the Chines monarchy. We then compared maps of the changing Ottoman Empire. At its height, it extended from the Middle East, across North Africa and into parts of Europe. We looked at how the Ottoman Empire began to contract in the 19th century as well as groups that pushed for reforms and modernization such as the Young Ottomans and the Young Turks. Japan's transition into a powerful, industrialized, imperialistic nation happened during an era known as the Meiji Restoration in the 2nd half of the 19th century. We concluded with a brief review for the test tomorrow.
