Lesson Outline
As Act II opens, the stage manager discusses events that have transpired over the prior 3 years since the close of Act I . After we reviewed the theme of the passing time and the symbols of the passage of time, Jaydn located and discussed the cluster of time related images in the opening scene of Act II. As Act II is named "Love and Marriage" , predictably the play depicts the marriage of George and Emily. We explored the significance of Mrs Gibb's proclaiming that "weddings are a farce." Jaydn actively participated in class discussion and offered her opinion that some traditional wedding ceremonies are empty and meaningless. After we discussed how Mrs. Gibbs has forfeited her dream of travel in order to become a housewife, Jaydn commented that this scene stereotyped women as do many movies and TV shows written by men who(Jaydn argues) marginalize a woman's grief and disappointments. Jaydn was absent for our second scheduled session.
