Lesson Outline
I introduced the "carpe diem" theme of the play by examining the dreams each character has failed to realize. I first defined the term and we then studied the text and located the dialogue wherein each character comments on his/her life's aspirations . We further examined how marriage forms or alters human relationships as we studied the wedding day of George and Emily. Noting how the playwright bends time and brings us back to the couple's mutual proposal, we examined how George, believing Emily is perfect, perhaps places her on a pedestal and therefore fails to appreciate her dreams ,thoughts, and feelings. Again, noting the play's theme to appreciate the quotidian, we discussed how projecting unrealistic expectations on someone can blind accurate perception.
