George Washington
Lesson Outline
Today's activities involved facts about George Washington. Sadee began by writing/copying sentences which were facts about George Washington. She asked me to darken some of the lines on the penmanship paper to facilitate her ability to write on the lines and bring her letters down to touch them, a skill she is refining. We then watched a video and collaboratively read a picture book about Washington. Sadee had fun seeing the quarter coins that had been left for her, and I showed her how to lightly rub a pencil over a paper placed over the coin to create a rubbing of Washington's face. We also worked on a cut-out hands-on-activity assembling paper puzzle pieces to create a picture of the Washington monument when put together. Sadee drew related symbols on the borders of her paper, which included a flag, the Washington monument, some addition facts (as Washington liked math), and a picture of Washington's face. I then read 9 pages out of her Boxcar book, the chapter entitled, 'The Wedding.' Sadee made accurate predictions and answered questions about the characters. To reinforce her hard work today, we spent the last ten minutes of the class viewing two caterpillars that had been brought in by a staff member for the students' viewing pleasure. Sadee enjoyed learning the type of butterfly it would become, and viewed a picture of it; we agreed that it looked more like a moth. We had a few minutes to go outside where we enjoyed watching the antics of a cat, squirrel, and an unusual hovering insect, and we mimicked the chirping of the birds with our combined whistling skills. I mentioned that we were at the game on Saturday but did not see Sadee or her sisters there. Sadee filled up a personalized water bottle that Ms. Judie had gotten her. She appeared happy to start the week off in both a fun and productive manner and gave me a warm hug before getting ready for her next class.
