Origins of the Matthews Family
Lesson Outline
There is a large poster of a couple in the room where Cameron has been at his grandparents' house this week. Cameron said it reads, "Senator Matthews, 5th District, 1924. HW last night was to ask his grandparents about this poster, but he said he forgot to do it. So we looked into it today and discovered some interesting history. The Matthews family is an American political family traced back to 1757 in colonial Virginia and active in Virginia and the American South in the 18th–20th centuries. Several members played a role in the American Revolution, and numerous members were elected to the Virginia General Assembly over successive generations, while other members were involved in the politics of West Virginia, Georgia, and other southern U.S. states. Members have served in the U.S. military as generals, colonels, and other officers. We couldn't find specific information about the Matthews couple in the poster. Cameron said he will try to remember to ask his grandparents about them.
