Lesson Outline
Define and discuss what are considered heavy metals, lead, arsenic, and mercury.
For each one, reveal how they are found naturally, how they enter into the water system, and list and discuss the toxic effects of each heavy metal on fetuses, children, and adults.
Relate how Flint Michigan's water supply was made toxic by leaching of lead into the drinking water when Flint switched from the Detroit water system system supply to its own from the Flint River.
Discuss the role of orthophosphates in protecting the lead pipes from leaching, which was not added to the water when they switched over.
Research what is being done to governments around the world to lessen the effects of mercury poisoning.
