Lesson Topic
The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s
Lesson Outline
The goal of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s was to end segregation and discrimination against Blacks. It fought for equal rights and freedoms for Black Americans. The significant events that occurred during this period include the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the emergence of the Little Rock Nine, the Montgomery bus boycott, the emergence of Freedom Riders groups, and the March on Washington. These events helped address many issues that Black people were facing and the important role of the Civil Rights Movement. The movement helped propel the government into creating laws that fostered equality among all and end of discriminatory practices against the Black People such as segregation. However, the movement faced oppression and suppression from the government, assassination and murder of top leaders, and lack of funding. More than ten of its leaders were assassinated, while most faced threats and physical harm. Despite the challenges, the Civil Rights Movement was largely successful in promoting equality and reducing racial discrimination.
