Session Date
Lesson Topic
Comprehension and synthesis.
Lesson Outline
We began by reviewing the last chapter in 'Sadako and the Thousand Cranes.' Liam's memory for details is assisted by prompts; his responses are short and concise but when prompted to add more detail, the questions asked of him tend to elicit greater detail. We collaboratively read chapter 5 in the book and Liam was tasked with reviewing and writing a list of characters and the significance of the main event. He wrote a sentence about about Peace Day and was encouraged to reflect on the character traits of courage and bravery demonstrated by the main character. Liam wrote close to a page and was given a homework assignment about narrative non-fiction after discussing what the term meant. We also briefly reviewed examples of similes and metaphors in the book, which have typically been a bit more challenging for Liam to conceptualize due to its abstract nature; however when discussing the examples, Liam demonstrated improvement in his ability to synthesize and interpret the literal expressions correctly.
