Topic 2 Analyze and Use Proportional Relationships
Lesson Outline
We learned that in mathematics, a rate is the ratio between two related quantities. In describing the units of a rate, the word "per" is used to separate the units of the two measurements used to calculate the rate (for example a heart rate is expressed "beats per minute"). When rates are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as 2 feet per second or 5 miles per hour, they are called unit rates. If you have a multiple-unit rate such as 120 students for every 3 buses, and want to find the single-unit rate, write a ratio equal to the multiple-unit rate with 1 as the second term. Next we solved several word problems requiring us to find the unit rate.
