Liam worked on a reading activity and Venn diagram sheet for Chapter 6 to activate prior knowledge. He asked several intuitive questions as we read about Sadako handling her illness with hope and courage. After guided reading, he was encouraged to reflect on content to monitor comprehension, via summarizing and synthesizing, making textual, personal, and world connections, and creating and analyzing sensory images. Liam used a 'Before, During, and After' chart to reflect on what he knows, wants to know, and what he learned from reading chapters 7-9. He was tasked with making inferences with text evidence to explain how Sadako's mother handles her illness. We reviewed several vocabulary words with which he was unfamiliar in the chapters, and Liam was prompted to explain his implied understanding from text evidence and background knowledge. We have a final chapter to read next week and can then begin making our origami cranes. Liam is looking forward to this activity.
