Lesson Outline
We completed our analysis of Emerson's esoteric essay titled"On Nature ". After I reviewed the techniques employed in a descriptive essay ,JP identified in the passage examples of metaphors, personification and imagery. We then explored the abstract metaphor of the "transparent eyeball" . We noted how Emerson uses a compare/contrast organization in addition to description to advance his argument. Further ,we explored how Emerson's view of communicating with God through Nature contrasts with the famous quote of St Paul that mortal men can only"see through a glass darkly" while on this earth. Further, I defined the type of metaphor known as schenecdoche and we located an example of this device in the essay. We discussed why personification and schenedoche are effective rhetorical devices . Last, we studied a painting by Thomas Cole,"The picnic", and explored how the painter's theme illustrates the thesis of Emerson's essay.
