What is a Function
Lesson Outline
Today we started with a warm up asking Ben to graph the line y=4x+2. He needed a reminder to start with the y-intercept of 2, but then was able to finish it correctly. I asked him to consider the domain and range. Ben was able to recall domain is the x-values and range ins the y-values. He stated that the graph goes forever (since its a line), and the domain and range would both be "all real numbers". I was proud he was able to recall the lesson from yesterday. Next, I showed him a 2 minute video, it was silly, but it explained that if it's a function, each x would have only 1 y. I emphasized this point by writing in in Expo marker on his table. Then I moved to the white board and drew two graphs, One with a U shape another with a circle. I drew a vertical line through each and asked him "Does this x only have one y?" I showed Ben how the U-shape graph only has one y for each x, however the circle graph connected with the vertical line twice. So according to the definition of a function (each x can have only 1 y that corresponds to it), the circle graph is not a function. This introduced to us the Vertical Line Test. I explained to Ben that if you draw a vertical line through the graph, it may only intersect in one location. If the vertical line passes more than once, it's not a function. After Ben felt comfortable with the concept, we moved into a Matching Activity. I had squares with Function/Domain/Range and Ben had to match each Letter to the appropriate graph. Ben did excellent with this activity!
