Unit 5- Evidence/Transitions/ Synthesis essay
Lesson Outline
As we are studying how to incorporate layers of evidence and commentary into an essay, we parsed last night's reading essay addressing whether paying reparations to African-Americans is constitutional. As we discussed the writer's thesis , I provided suggestions for providing greater detail in a thesis statement. We then identified the writer's evidence ,prior Supreme Court cases, and explored the necessity of legal harm and standing. I pointed out how the writer's suppositions as to how the Supreme Court might respond to a legislative program of reparations constitutes commentary that takes the form or argument. We noted how the writer integrates his evidence with his argument culminating in a conclusion that reparations would be unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment.
