Review relative dating of rocks. Do absolute dating worksheets p. 183-185. Discuss 3 types of radioactive isotopes used in absolute dating: Carbon-14, Potassium-40, and Uranium-238. Compare and contrast the half-lives and applications of these three isotopes. Understand why igneous rocks cannot be Carbon-14 dated. Understand why sedimentary rocks cannot be directly absolutely dated. Identify how sedimentary rocks (and the fossils they contain) can be indirectly absolutely dated.
