Lesson Topic
organic compounds
Lesson Outline
Show how carbon must always have 4 bonds in a molecule. Discuss methane and its molecular formula, writing the formula on the board. Write the molecular formulas for methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, and hexane. Discuss the ANE ending and that it indicates an alkane compound. Define an alkane compound. Use molecular models and have Ben construct an ethane molecule. Determine from all the formulas that each succeding alkane differs by only one CH2 molecule.
