Luke was humming a well-known song when I arrived, but didn't know what it was when I asked him about it. So we did some research. I played it on my laptop, "The Star Spangled Banner," and we researched it and learned that it's the national anthem of the United States of America. This led us to what the acronym U.S.A. stands for and circled the three letters on the whiteboard as we discussed and what an anthem means. Today's lesson was inspired by Luke's interest and embraced integrated, and reinforced his recognition and understanding of our national anthem - although he could not remember where he heard it or when it is sung. We also learned that its words were inspired by a poem and it was written by Francis Scott Key. As the session was ending, the seal of the United States came on the screen. We plan to research that in tomorrow's session as we review subject-specific terminology (anthem/patriotic). Luke appeared to enjoy listening to the anthem, which was accompanied by me singing its lyrics. We enjoyed a fun, interesting, and productive class.
